Body butter recipe (for melanated skin)

The Apothecary Os is the first formulation OS built for melanated skin and hair — this guide shows you how to make a stable, non-greasy whipped body butter that won't turn ashy on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin.

Why generic body butter recipes fail on melanated skin

Most "clean beauty" body butter recipes online are written for pale, dry skin. On melanin-rich skin they leave a chalky cast, sit on top of the skin, and worst — trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) when they clog. Our builder scores every oil for comedogenicity and balances the butter/oil ratio for real absorption.

The base ratio

For 100g of finished whipped body butter:

  • 50g shea butter — soft, high in stearic + oleic acid, deeply nourishing.
  • 20g mango butter — lighter than shea, adds silky slip.
  • 25g fractionated coconut oil — non-comedogenic, keeps the whip soft.
  • 4g jojoba oil — mimics sebum, boosts absorption.
  • 1g vitamin E — antioxidant, extends shelf life.
  • Optional: up to 1% essential oil (check IFRA limits).

Step by step

  1. Weigh all butters and hard oils into a double boiler. Melt at 75°C until fully liquid.
  2. Remove from heat. Add liquid oils and vitamin E.
  3. Rapid-cool in an ice-water bath, stirring every 2 minutes, until edges start to firm (~30 min).
  4. Whip with a hand mixer on high for 5–8 minutes until light and glossy.
  5. Add essential oil if using. Whip 30 seconds more.
  6. Spoon into a sanitized 4oz jar. Shelf life: 9–12 months.

Frequently asked

Why does my body butter go grainy?

Grainy butter = uneven crystal formation. Melt everything fully (75°C+), then rapid-cool in an ice bath before whipping. Shea butter is the biggest offender because stearic and oleic acids crystallize at different temperatures.

What's the best butter ratio for melanated skin?

For dry, ashy or hyperpigmentation-prone skin, aim for 70% butters + 30% liquid oils. Shea + mango + fractionated coconut is a classic combo — high in linoleic/stearic acid without being comedogenic.

Do I need a preservative?

Not if the formula is 100% anhydrous (no water). Add vitamin E at 0.5–1% as an antioxidant to extend shelf life to 9–12 months. If you introduce any water (aloe juice, hydrosol), you need a broad-spectrum preservative.

How much essential oil is safe?

For leave-on body products, IFRA limits most EOs to 0.5–3%. Our EO safety tool gives the exact dermal-safe % per oil and product type.
