Natural preservation for cosmetics
The Apothecary Os is the first formulation OS built for melanated skin and hair — and preservation matters more here, because contaminated products cause the inflammation that becomes hyperpigmentation.
Do you actually need a preservative?
Two rules cover 95% of cases:
- No water = no preservative. 100% anhydrous body butters, oil serums and balms only need vitamin E as an antioxidant.
- Any water = broad-spectrum preservative, always. Aloe juice, hydrosols, floral water, brewed tea — all count as water.
Preservatives that work (and their pH ranges)
- Preservative Eco / Geogard ECT — pH 3–8, 0.6–1%. Broad-spectrum. Widely accepted as natural.
- Geogard 221 — pH 3–6, 0.6–1%. Good for cleansers and low-pH toners.
- Leucidal Liquid SF — pH 3–8, 2–4%. Fermented, ECOCERT.
- NataPres — pH 3–8, 2–5%. Blend for higher-pH systems.
- Sodium benzoate + potassium sorbate — pH under 5.5, 0.5% each. Very cheap, effective.
Frequently asked
Is vitamin E a preservative?
No — it's an antioxidant. It slows oil rancidity but does nothing against bacteria, mold or yeast. If your formula contains any water (even aloe juice or hydrosol), you need a real broad-spectrum preservative.
What are the best 'natural' preservatives?
Preservative Eco (benzyl alcohol + salicylic acid + glycerin + sorbic acid), Geogard 221, Leucidal Liquid SF and NataPres are the most widely accepted 'natural-standard' options. Each has a pH range — use the preservation tool to match.
Can I use grapefruit seed extract as a preservative?
No. Independently tested GSE only preserves because it's contaminated with synthetic preservatives (methylparaben, triclosan, benzethonium chloride). Uncontaminated GSE has no antimicrobial activity.
How long does an unpreserved product last?
Anhydrous (100% oil/butter, no water): 6–12 months with vitamin E. Any water present, unpreserved: 3–5 days refrigerated before mold/bacteria bloom is likely — do not sell or gift it.
